It is almost impossible to live a stress-free life. Modern living puts an inordinate number of demands on people as a matter of daily life. Paying bills, raising children and work at home and office all creates a heavy load. Too much stress begins the flight or fight mechanism that is part of the human condition.
Stress is often created when people worry about performing well in their lives. The amount of daily tasks that need to be taken care of on a regular basis builds stress day by day. Seasonal stresses, such as school shopping and the holidays, make things worse. Money becomes an issue during these times as saving on school shopping is an important goal. Reducing stressors makes life easier on everyone and helps individuals and families cope better.
Here are some tips to reduce stress in everyday life:
- Identify where the stress is coming from. This is the first step towards reducing the overall strain. Sometimes it is work, sometimes it is the mind creating the problem. Take a good look at the sources and try to uncover the triggers. Stress isn’t something that happens by itself. It requires a catalyst to get it going. Understanding the trigger and how you react to it is the first step to reduction.
- Examine how you cope with stress. Are you using avoidance techniques so that you don’t have to deal with the issues? Avoidance techniques can include smoking a cigarette, drinking to excess, overeating or under eating, abusing prescription medication and other destructive habits. They may feel good during the activity and leave a lingering satisfaction, but they do nothing to alleviate the stress. Eliminate avoidance in favor of meeting the stress head on.
- Once you have identified the source of the stress, you need to engage in two types of activities. You need to change the situation and change your reaction. You need to acknowledge that you have control over the situation and how you react. Doing so empowers you to change your relationship with the stressor and handle it more effectively.
- Stay away from unnecessary stress. Avoid, say no, minimize and take control. Don’t take on anything more than you can handle. Change your environment to avoid the stressors. Learn to say no and don’t take on any extra tasks that make you feel overly stressed.
- Learn how to express your thoughts and feelings. If you don’t say anything, people will keep taking advantage of you. Push back a little bit and set boundaries. Don’t let anyone cross them unless it’s for a very good reason.
- Manage your time more efficiently. If you don’t already make it a point to delineate your day into things that you are going to do and things you absolutely are not going to do, then you leave cracks for other things to slip in.
Stress will always be with you in some form or another. However, it does not have to rule your life.
