How to Help Your Friends Find a Job

Finding a job can be difficult in today’s economic climate. If you are not looking for a job, chances are that one of your friends is. They may have even asked you for help if they have been unsuccessful. You have the ability to help your friend become more employable. The first thing you can provide is moral support. Looking for a job can be devastating to a person’s self-esteem. Once low self-esteem sets in, it only becomes more difficult to find a job. After you have psychologically and emotionally propped up your friend you can also help in the following three ways:

1. Help them become computer savvy

One of the top reasons a friend may not be able to find a job is because they are not using all available resources. A thorough job search today means having nearly unlimited access to a computer and the Internet. Your friend should have at the bare minimum a computer with an Internet connection available to check three times per day. He or she should have an email address, know how to access it, and know how to use it. They should also be familiar with proper grammar and online etiquette. Your friend should also know where to look for jobs online and how to apply for them. This means creating a profile on some of the top job search websites.

2. Help them create or update their resume

It is difficult to get a job without a well-planned and current resume. If your friend doesn’t have a resume, he or she needs one immediately. If you do not know how to write a resume, you can point your friend to a professional resume-writing service. If your friend doesn’t have enough money for a resume-writing service, you can help them learn how to write a resume themselves. Several free tutorials and free websites are available that can teach you how to write an effective resume. Be sure to follow all of the tips. A resume’s purpose is to help the job applicant get noticed, not to provide a lot of detailed information. If your friend can get noticed, he or she will have plenty to talk about at the interview.

3. Encourage your friend to go to school

If your friend is having a problem finding a job and doesn’t have a college education, you can encourage him or her to go to school. Enrolling in college is not very difficult and several sources of financial aid are available to help pay for it. If transportation is an issue, an online bachelor degree is just as valid as one earned in a traditional classroom. An online bachelor degree is an option more and more people are becoming familiar with in this time of economic stress and busy lifestyles. Educational programs that can be completed online are available in all fields. For help in choosing a college or university with an online bachelor degree program, several websites are available that review educational institutions and provide all the options available at them.
