How to Get a Brighter Smile Naturally

appleMany stains on teeth are caused by things we love to eat and drink – coffee, cola, and wine. Unfortunately we don’t love the look of dingy teeth. Having a vivid, white smile is something that many people desire, but they don’t always want the hassle and expense that can come with it. There are some alternative methods to getting the bright, toothy smile you crave. But to be on the safe side, you should always consult with a dental professional before attempting these methods.

When life gives you lemons

Lemon juice and salt or baking soda – The citric acid in lemon juice can lighten stains on your teeth and the salt or baking soda will scrub away plaque. As with any acid, you want to rinse it away and not allow it to linger on your teeth for too long, as it can remove layers of enamel that can never be replaced.

Life is a bowl of strawberries

Strawberries and baking soda – Cut up some strawberries, be sure to discard the seeds, and mix it with baking soda and just enough water to create a paste. Spread the paste onto your teeth and let it sit for a few minutes before brushing thoroughly. The malic acid in the strawberries will help remove unsightly stains on your teeth, but you need to remove the all the strawberry juice, which contains sugar, to avoid further dental problems.

An apple a day

According to Prevention.com, The acid naturally contained in apples as well as their high-fiber content make them a healthy way to brighten your teeth and enjoy a healthy snack. Other crunchy foods, including carrots and celery can scrub away stains, little by little, over time. Just be sure to rinse your mouth out to wash away the natural sugars left behind by the fruit.

Take it with salt

If you wish to bypass the fruit, you can make a paste of salt and baking soda to scrub your teeth with. The taste may be a bit much for you, and you should avoid swallowing the mixture. Rinse your mouth with clean water once you’ve brushed.

Peroxide

The blonde-in-a-bottle also has some benefits for whitening teeth. Despite its unpleasant taste, rinsing with peroxide kills bacteria and whitens your teeth.

Whatever method you choose, you should always consult with a dental professional before trying a new teeth whitening regimen. The best way to keep your smile bright is to avoid some of the food and drink that stain them to begin with. Cut back on soda, coffee, wine and cigarettes. And don’t forget to take good care of your chompers by brushing and flossing regularly.
