There are so many advice articles about how to market to men via Facebook and social media, because it’s tech it’s seen as a male domain but aren’t females the social gender? If you want to increase your appeal to women there are certain things you’ve got to do.
1. Don’t make it obvious you’re selling her stuff. We see billboards and ads on TV and in magazines, on the radio all day long. Use a little subtlety and try to make your marketing informative and worth the time to look at when you’re trying to break social media.
2. Connect with her and you’ll start to see brand loyalty. Once you’ve shown her you care develop the relationship and she’ll become a loyal user and eventually a brand ambassador. It’s far cheaper to sell to a loyal customer than to convert a new one. Women want to feel that they’re bonded, make them feel accepted and you’ll keep them on side.
3. Give them a voice. Women have historically been the voiceless ones, on the internet they have found a platform that gives them an equal footing. Traditional advertising has been about sending a message in a single direction, social media gives the customer the chance to talk back, to tell you what they think and where you could improve your service. Listen.
4. Add richness, not burden. If you’re going to introduce a new line is it enriching her life or just adding another level of decision making to the process? A woman’s life is full of choices already so unless making your detergent smell of bubblegum also makes it 75% more efficient and stops clothes suffering wear and tear the new smell doesn’t really add much does it? Go away and come back with something better.
5. Have something to say. Just repeating your brand message through the social channel again, doesn’t add anything, you’re just using it as another mouthpiece. If she’s engaging with you on your Facebook page make her feel like she’s important and being listened to. Keep her coming back by adding to the conversation whenever she’s around. You know, treat her like a lady.
6. Make life easy for her. You want to sell her something so don’t put obstacles in her way. Since women do most of the household spending and also have an eye for a shoe or a bag she has control of the majority of the spend that’s coming through your cash register, make that difficult for her and she might put up with it once or twice but consistently grind her gears and she’ll never come back, not only that, she’ll tell her friends. Bad word of mouth is word of mouth you do not want.
7. People buy from people. It’s easy to forget as you’re sitting staring into the glow of a plasma screen that the person who will be reading what you write is a person. “shoes, black, strappy with heels” might be a perfectly accurate description but you need to make then scream at her to buy them. “super sassy pair of black strappy heels that would look gorgeous with that little black dress.” Might get a more emotional response. Also, keep her interest by giving offers for large purchases and repeat business. Is it beyond the wit of your IT dept to keep track of what she likes and email her when you have something in you think she might like? Birthday offers are a totally winning idea too.
