Remodeling: When Spring Cleaning Isn’t Enough

Remodeling your house is a big endeavor. It takes a lot of money, time, and effort. Even a small job can be very costly and stressful. When you decide to remodel your home, there are many things you need to keep in mind. We will discuss three of the most important things to remember. Following a good plan with each of these tips well taken care of will ensure that your remodel goes well and looks exactly how you want it.

Set Up a Budget

Expense is a huge aspect of a remodel. You need to have the money to pay for everything. You can save up cash to spend on labor and costs, or you can take out a loan. Many people take out a second mortgage or a home equity loan to pay for their home remodel. If you’re prepared to take on the extra loan payments each month, this is a good choice.

Set up a budget and stick with it. Most importantly, budget correctly. Don’t make estimates based on what makes sense to you. Get real estimates. Look online to find costs of materials and get estimates and quotes from contractors. Better yet, add a cushion to your budget and estimate costs high. This will make sure you have the money for upsets or unexpected expenses.

Get the Right Contractors

Some people choose to remodel their homes on their own. This can save a lot of money on labor costs. However, depending on what your project is, there may be things that you can’t do or that are better done by professionals. Putting a coat of paint on the wall is one thing, but installing kitchen cabinets or new plumbing is something much more difficult. If you don’t have the expertise to complete a project of this magnitude, hire someone who does.

Hiring a contractor can be tricky. You don’t want someone who will charge way too much money, but you want it done right, too. If you know anyone in the construction industry, ask them for recommendations. If you know someone who has recently done work on their house, ask them who they used, and ask them if they worked well.  Check online review sites like angie’s list for information on contractors.  Whatever you choose to do, make sure you get all the info BEFORE you hire anyone.

Get the right contractors for the right job. You might want to hire a general contractor if you plan to have them do all the work. If not, you will need to contact subcontractors for the job.

Get Permission

Usually you need to get legal permits for most home improvement jobs that change the structure of your home. Find out what the rules are in your town. This may take some time, so budget it into your timeline. Be on top of things such as permits because you don’t want to get yourself in trouble or mess anything up.

As your remodel is underway, revisit these topics frequently to ensure the job is getting done right. Keep an eye on your budget whenever a new purchase is necessary, be at your home when the contractors are working to make sure they are doing things right, and always get the right permits.
