Diabetes is a disease in which the blood sugar or glucose levels in your system gets too high. The tools necessary for monitoring blood sugar levels are: the blood glucose meter and a glucose chart (log). The chart is used to keep a daily record of your blood sugar levels and is essential part of the monitoring requirements and which can be invaluable to you, your doctor and/or healthcare professional.
There’s a wide variety of meters available but the operating concept is practically the same for all. A blood sample is taken with a lancet (quantities vary depending on the meter) and placed on a test strip, the strip is then inserted into the meter, the meter then provides a digital record along with a readout of your blood glucose level. Due to the number of meters available, deciding on the right one can be rather difficult. Here are some tips which may be of assistance in helping you find the right blood meter to meet your needs. Although cost may be a factor in your choice, this should not be the main criteria for your final selection.
1. If there’s a problem with your vision, you’ll need a blood glucose meter that can be easily read. One with a large digital readout is recommended in this situation.
2. The amount of blood required for testing varies depending on the meter. It is advisable therefore, that you choose a meter which needs the minimum amount of blood while still providing you with accurate readings.
3. Multi-site meters (a blood sample can be taken from different locations) are also available and comes highly recommended.
4. Some meters are preprogrammed while others may need programming. You need to choose one of the former if you are not confident in your ability to perform the programming yourself.
5. A major feature of the new meter is its memory capacity. Some meters save only the last blood test while others can save five hundred (500) previous results. The larger capacity is recommended since it enables you to keep track of your readings over time.
6. Depending on your situation the size of the meter may be a factor. They can be as small as a cell phone but your manual dexterity must be taken into consideration when making a purchase. Note that this also affects the display size.
7. Consider the cost of the blood glucose test strips for whichever meter you choose. Depending on the frequency of your testing this can be an extremely expensive proposition.
Blood Glucose Monitoring is highly recommended for all diabetics whether it is done by oneself or a caregiver. The information gathered can then be used to determine the most effective way of managing your illness. Self monitoring increases patient involvement in self-care but is only effective if done correctly and in parallel with your health-care provider or doctor.
