How to Hire a Remodeling Contractor

If you are in the market for a remodeling contractor, you might not know where to start your search.  Beginning a remodeling  job can seem like a huge project when you first start thinking about what you want to do to the inside of your house. Whether you are planning on gutting a room entirely or just replacing some old cabinets, you want to make sure the job gets done right—the first time!

One good way to make sure everything goes according to plan is to hire the right remodeling contractor, which can be a difficult task in itself if you don’t have any previous experience working with contractors. Here are a few methods to get you headed in the right direction:

1.  Do your research. At the very least, make sure the contractor has all the proper training and licensing that is required by law. Since remodeling your house is not usually a cheap endeavor, it can be temping to shop around based on the lowest price someone is willing to quote you. Be warned: you might just get what you pay for. A cut-rate contractor will probably skimp on quality wherever he thinks he can get away with it. This might mean sub-par materials, workmanship or both. This isn’t to say that you have to go with the most expensive contractor. There are good workers out there for reasonable prices, but you must do your homework before you hire.

2. While you are in the process of researching potential contractors, keep in mind the kind of work they usually get hired to do and what most of their experience is in. Like doctors, contractors can sometimes end up having specialties. If you’re doing bathroom remodeling, try searching for a contractor that has lots of previous experience working with bathroom remodels and a portfolio to show you of their former projects. You want to be especially mindful if you are thinking of doing something that requires excellent workmanship like custom cabinetry. You can always try something as simple as doing an Internet search for custom cabinetry to get an idea of what good work might look like and where to start looking for contractors that specialize in it. You are better off finding a professional that has a specialization in the particular work you want done, then a general contractor who might have little experience in the particular area of the house you want work to be done.

3. Last but not least, don’t be afraid to interview the potential contractors. Shop around. You want to talk to more than one contractor before making a decision. Even if the first contractor you talk to knocks your socks off, you should still seek a second opinion. Remember how important it is to your project’s success to find a professional, competent contractor. You want to put the work in from the start so that you aren’t left to clean up a mess in the end.
