If you play Halo 3 online you may have noticed a few people with special armor. Well what is it and how do you get it? It’s called Recon armor and it was originally only given as a reward by Bungie to employees or players with exceptional achievements (zbshogun got it for being killed by a traffic cone!). It’s now an unlockable achievement but is one of the hardest in the game due to the sheer number of achievements required to get it. Follow these steps to get your own set of Recon Armor!

- Xbox LIVE account
- 3 friends
Recon armor can be unlocked by completing the following seven achievements known as Vidmasters:
Halo 3
-Vidmaster Challenge: Annual
-Vidmaster Challenge: 7 on 7
-Vidmaster Challenge: Lightswitch
Halo 3 ODST
-Vidmaster Challenge: Brainpan
-Vidmaster Challenge: Classic
-Vidmaster Challenge: Deja Vu
-Vidmaster Challenge: Endure
Steps to unlock Recon Armor
1. The first thing you need to do is sign up for a bungie.net account. You will need this in order to claim your armor once you have unlocked all the required achievements.
2. Follow the guide for each achievement below
Vidmaster Challenge: Annual
This is the most difficult achievement to unlock and will take about two hours or so. In this achievement you must complete the mission Halo on Legendary difficulty in a 4 player live co-op game, with the Iron skull activated and everyone in Ghosts.
Remember: Everyone has to finish in Ghosts or the achievement wont unlock.
How to complete Vidmaster Challenge: Annual in Halo 3
Vidmaster Challenge: 7 on 7
This one is simple if a little strange! You must get 7 EXP on the 7th of any month. That’s it.
Vidmaster Challenge: Lightswitch
The easiest of the lot, the player must gain 50 playlist Exp to reach the rank of playlist Lieutenant (any playlist). It’s simple to do just win 50 games in one gametype. Done!
Vidmaster Challenge: Brainpan
Unlike some other vidmasters, this one is worth 25 Gamer points. You’ll need Halo 3: ODST’s Mythic maps to complete this one. Basically what you have to do for this achievement is find all the hidden Skulls on the Mythic maps, one skull for each of the six maps. The skulls are the same as in campaign mode, but have gold teeth!
Vidmaster Challenge: Classic
This achievement (also worth 25GS) is unlocked in ODST.
You must complete any mission on Legendary Difficulty, whilst signed into Xbox LIVE, without firing at all or throwing any grenades. The best mission to do for this achievement would be “Uplift Reserve” as you can simply use a Ghost to speed past the enemies. Concentrate on getting the achievement avoiding enemies and taking advantage of checkpoints and health pickups.
Important: Don’t touch the right trigger at all during the mission as even sounding the horn in a Warthog will count as a shot!

Vidmaster Challenge: Deja Vu
Complete the Halo 3: ODST mission ‘Coastal Highway’ in a 4-player Legendary Live co-op, with the Iron skull activated, without using the Warthog or Scorpion tank. You CAN use a Mongoose or Ghost.

Ok we’re nearly there! One more to go to unlock your shiny new Recon armor! This is unlocked when you play Halo 3: ODST Firefight, on a map of your choice, and pass the 4th set (the 12th round and 60th wave) in 4 player Live Co-op.
The easiest map to do is ‘Alpha Site’, as there are only two entrances to cover so you can split into two man teams.
3. Log into the Bungie.net account you created in step 1.
You will see all 7 Vidmaster achievements highlighted, if you have completed them all successfully you will see an ‘Unlock My Recon’ button, click it the go back and check your Armor List. You should now be the proud owner of a suit of Recon armor! Well done!
