Out and About With Babies and Small Children

Taking your children out of the home is never as convenient as what the home has to offer but below is my top 10 things that frustrate me the most when out and about with my children- and how to overcome them!

pushchairs

1.       As a Dad I find it extremely annoying when the baby changing room is within the female toilets and you’re made to change on the floor or some other unsuitable environment- so always carry a change mat in your bag for emergencies.

2.       Dirty high chairs and dirty nursery furniture, such as feeding chairs in restaurants and shops can be a problem so anti-bacterial wipes are always a must.

3.       No provision for dirty nappies to be disposed of in pub/restaurant toilets or any public place really. Make sure you keep stock of nappy bags so you can dispose of  them at a later date.

4.       Graffiti on children’s play equipment in public places.  Not much you can do about this but just check to ensure the play area is free from dangerous objects before allowing your children to play there.

5.       Un-supervised children in soft play areas running riot.  Make a point of telling staff that this is happening and get it stopped.

6.       When you’re out walking with the kids and dogs are being walked off the lead and in close proximity to your children.  The owner knows the dog but you don’t and this is quite worrying.  I find that making a polite request to the dog owner usually resolves the problem

7.       Not enough highchairs available in public areas so consider your venue prior to entering.

8.       When you’re in a restaurant and the waiter/waitress passes hot drinks or food straight over the childs head.  To avoid this just ask the waiter to pass the food in a specific direction avoiding any risk.

9.       The menu for small children in a restaurant is often very limited and contains only chips, nuggets, baked beans, turkey dinosaurs etc…  Pack healthy snacks for a balanced diet to supplement a poor menu.

10.   People who park in mother and baby car park spots that don’t have a child or baby on board.  Some places have now started fining people who abuse this which is a step forward so report anyone you see abusing these spaces to the customer services point.

Please feel free to comment and add what annoys you most, there must be hundreds of things but I have done my best to guide you in avoiding these situations where possible.
