If you polled 100 people on which one of their 5 senses would they least like to lose, the vast majority would say their eye sight. Our vision helps us enjoy life and very few of the things we like doing do not involve our vision. This article is going to give you a few hints and tips on how to keep your eyes healthy:
- Have regular eye tests: The single most important factor in keeping your eyes health is having regular eye tests. A lot of eye diseases such as Glaucoma, cataracts and certain kinds of Macular degeneration can be treated if the diseases are diagnosed early. Many of these conditions tend to affect your vision very slowly, meaning you may not notice that you have them before it is too late. This is why regular eye checks are so important.
- Check your blood pressure: High blood pressure can cause problems with the blood vessels in your eyes just as it can in the rest of your body. It can lead to blockages within the blood vessels in the eyes which can lead to irreversible loss of vision.
- Check your cholesterol: Similar to having high blood pressure, having high cholesterol can also affect the circulation of the blood in your eyes, potentially leading to visual problems.
- Check yourself for diabetes: Diabetes is the most common cause of blindness in the working population. If you are remotely concerned that you have it, you should see your doctor to get it checked.
- Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables: This is good advice to follow regardless of your eye health. There are certain types of fruit and vegetables that are known to be beneficial to the health of your eyes and there is growing evidence to suggest that they can slow down the progression of certain diseases such as cataracts. The best vegetables to eat are spinach, Kale and green cabbage.
- Don’t ignore visual symptoms: If you notice any thing strange with your eyes you should see your optometrist immediately. The most serious symptoms related to your eyes are flashing lights, distorted vision, blind spots in vision and sudden reduction in vision. If you ever notice any of these symptoms you should make an appointment as soon as possible.
This is not an exhaustive list but if you follow these pieces of advice your eyes are likely to be healthier for longer. Although medicine has progressed significantly over the past 10 years or so, we do still currently only get one pair of eyes.
