Tooth decay is one of the leading causes of dental work, affecting a great percentage of children and adults. Tooth decay, or cavities, is formed when sugar left to sit on the enamel of the teeth starts to wear away, creating holes and pockets. Tooth decay affects everyone from babies to adults and can be prevented by following a few simple steps.
1. Get into the habit of thoroughly brushing your teeth regularly. According to dentists, we should brush our teeth using soft, round-bristled toothbrushes twice a day. A thorough tooth brushing involves brushing every surface of the teeth and in between the teeth.
2. Visit your dentist for regular hygiene checks to ensure that you are not developing any cavities and for deep cleaning. No matter how thoroughly you brush, you may still miss some plaque buildup in your mouth. Regular visits to your hygienist will aid in reducing the amount of plaque around your teeth and gums.
3. Do not drink sugary drinks or consume sugary foods just before bed. Going to bed after having consumed sugary snacks and drinks without brushing is a sure way to develop cavities since the sugar rests on the enamel of the teeth all night long.
4. Be sure to use mouthwash to help prevent cavities. Mouthwash can fight cavities by decreasing and destroying plaque buildup in your mouth.
5. Daily flossing between your teeth will eliminate the potential for cavities by removing plaque.
