Caring for a boisterous German Shepherd puppy can be overwhelming if an owner has not had experience with the personalities of these wonderful dogs. One of the primary personality traits of German Shepherds is a tremendous energy that must be controlled by physical activity and mental stimulation. Frequent grooming and trips to the veterinarian’s office will keep a German Shepherd puppy in prime condition. Pet owners should carefully follow a veterinarian’s instructions on medication, feeding, and other activities that maintain their dog’s health. Most puppies grow very quickly during the first year of life, so they will need to be fed more than once daily. Many dogs prefer to be fed once in the morning and once in the evening, and then to be taken on brisk walks. Young puppies need to be walked more frequently, especially when they are learning to relieve themselves outside.
German Shepherds usually have medium-length, coarse fur, so they do not need to be brushed as often as long-haired dogs. Owners usually only need to brush these dogs once a week, although they may want to do so more often if a German Shepherd is shedding or has particularly long fur. These dogs also need regular baths with gentle soap about once every two or three weeks.
