How to Filter Inappropriate Sites in Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer comes complete with a default add-on called Content Advisor which allows you to restrict access to sites that are inappropriate for teenagers and younger children.  It’s easy to alter the settings to prevent children accessing adult material by  following these simple steps.

Step 1

Open Internet Explorer and click on the Tools menu.  Scroll to the bottom of the menu and click Internet Options.

Step 2

Click on the Content tab, then enable the Content Advisor. This opens a dialog box for you to adjust  the parental control settings in the browser.

Step 3

Go to the General tab and click Create password. Write it down or choose something you will easily remember as you will need it to alter the settings in the future.  You are now set up as the Administrator, which will prevent other users of your computer from altering the content advisor settings.

Step 4

Click the Ratings tab, then select each category of content e.g “Depiction of alcohol use” and adjust the slider according to how much of this content you want to be accessible.  You have the option to select, none, limited or unrestricted.

Step 5

If there are any sites you wish to approve, add the sites website URL on the “Approved sites” tab.

Step 6

When you’ve  finished, click Apply to save your changes. Click OK to close the options box, then restart Internet Explorer.
