Are you frustrated by the lack of ringtones for your iPhone? Wish you could make your own from songs in your iTunes library? Well thats exactly what you can do and it only takes a few minutes. This article explains how to do it!
You Will Need:
- iTunes
- Windows or Mac computer
- iPhone USB Sync cable
- Non-DRM song ripped from a CD or bought from a license free source (i.e. not purchased from the iTunes Store)
iTunes enables you alter a song’s start and finish times , which allows you to make free iPhone ringtones of your own from any (DRM free) song in your iTunes library in a few simple steps!
1. Open iTunes and select the song that you’d like to use as your ringtone (any MP3, ACC or AIFF file will work).

- Choose the song to use as your ringtone
2. Listen to the song to determine the best part to use as your ringtone. Usually choosing the chorus or another “catchy” section of the track works best as an iphone ringtone. Note down the start and end times of the part of the song you have picked.
3. Right click the song, and then “Get Info”
4. Click the “Options” tab
5. Click the “Start Time” and ”Stop Time” check boxes.

Set the Start and Stop times for your ringtone
6. Enter the start/stop times you noted down earlier into the appropriate boxes (Note: the total time for your ringtone must be 30 secs or less!). Click OK.
7. Highlight the song again, then click on the ”Advanced” menu and select “Create AAC Version” You will now have a duplicate of the original song but with a shorter track time.
8. Play the duplicate track to make sure you have got your selection right and that you will be happy with it as your ringtone. If not repeat steps 2-7!
9. Go back to the orignal song and uncheck the Start/Stop Time boxes. If you forget to do this, you will find that your iPhone or iPod will only be able to play the short section you selected!

- Orignal File duplicated with new running time
10. Drag the Duplicate file onto your computer desktop, then delete it from your iTunes library.
11. Go to your desktop and rename the file extension to “.m4r”

12. Double click the icon on your desktop and hey presto! iTunes should have imported the file directly into your ringtones folder as a new ringtone!

13. Sync your iPhone with iTunes.
14. When your iPhone sync is complete, go to Settings->Sounds->Ringtone on your iPhone. You should find your new ringtone listed above the default iphone ringtones, in a new list named “Custom”.
