How to Fix a Broken Tile

fix-broken-tile Do you have a broken or chipped tile in your kitchen or bathroom?  Did you know you can replace it without having to re-tile the whole area? Follow this step-by-step essential guide to fixing broken tiles.

You will need

  • A spare tile
  • Grout remover/raker
  • Power drill fitted with a ceramic tile bit
  • Hammer
  • Cold chisel
  • Tile adhesive and spreader
  • Grout and grout spreader
  • Tile spacers (small cross shaped pieces of plastic)
  • Damp sponge
  • Safety goggles!

Steps

1. Using the grout raker/remover, scrape away the grout around all four edges of the damaged tile.

2. Put on your safety goggles. Drill a few holes in the center of the tile to weaken it and make it easier to remove.

3. Working from the center out, carefully break out all the pieces of old tile using the hammer and chisel, avoiding damaging the wall behind.

4.  Scrape away all the old tile adhesive from the wall, making sure the new tile can fit flush and level with the surrounding old tilework when fitted.

5. Spread tile adhesive on the back of the new tile using a spreader, and carefully place it in the gap.

6.  Push tile spacers into the corners to stop the tile moving and ensure it is aligned correctly.

7. Wipe the damp sponge across the tile surface to remove any excess tile adhesive on the tile surface.

8.  Mix up a small amount of grout, then using the spreader push the grout into the gaps around the tile.

9.  Wipe off excess grout with the damp sponge and leave to dry.
